This year I have the privilege of serving at Sacred Heart Retreat House as Kitchen Assistant. My assignment encompasses a variety of duties including assisting with setting up and clearing meals, food and beverage preparations, maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, and communication regarding meals. Each day our mission, “to promote a deeper spiritual life among God’s people” is very present to me.
Frequently, I recall “Food is God’s love made edible,” a saying of a former college professor. When I am helping to set a buffet line or passing a plate down our serving line, I think how this presentation can be a tangible expression of God’s love for those who are about to partake. In this way, it can be a means of helping to foster their spiritual life.
I also think of our foundress, Mother Luisita. She said, “In order to pray well, it is necessary to eat well, sleep well, and recreate well.” In helping to feed our sisters, priests, retreatants, volunteers, and all other guests who pass through our dining halls, I am helping them to prepare for encountering God in prayer. Additionally, I am enabling them to have the necessary energy to go forward and serve God in whatever section of His vineyard He has placed them.
