The lighting of candles has been observed since the early the time of the early martyrs. We usually have a prayer intention, a person, a situation that we wish to pray for specifically. This custom begins with lighting a candle and the kneeling down to pray for a particular person. groups of people, or a specific situation.
The burning candle becomes a symbol or manifestation or continuation, in a sense, of our prayer intention. The burning candle remains as a sign of our prayers rising up to Heaven day and night. Often a candle is lit before an image or statue of Jesus, Mary, or one of the Saints as we ask Him for His help or ask one of the Saints to unite with us in prayer.
If you cannot journey to Sacred Heart Retreat House, the Carmelite Sisters will light a candle for you at our Sacred Heart Shrine and we will also pray for you and your intentions. The candle will last approximately 5 days.
